How to tell if my fuel tanks are 5 gal or 3.5 ?

How to tell if my fuel tanks are 5 gal or 3.5 ?

I have an extra set of fuel tanks off my 1961 foot shift FLH. trouble is I need to know to correct size to advertise them .
They have no numbers anywhere.

3,5 gallon, I heard 65 was the first 5 gallon, but I'm no expert...Mike

These are original 3.5 gal tanks, 5 gal are wider.

All 5 gallon tanks except for the '65 only ones have vent lines on top in the depression for the dash. All 5 gallon tanks except the '65 have threaded holes for a normal petcock and no through rod for reserve.

From a Panhead perspective, dontcha mean "abnormal"?
Very true Cotten, however I am trying to keep it in terms a younger crowd may understand. If he can't tell from first glance if they are 3.5 or 5 he likely isn't all too versed in Pan technology!
