Front Primary mount holes/cases, heli-coil ??

#1

Post by jbgoodner2 »

Good mornin', Brothers !!!!!!!!! Has anyone used heli-coils to repair stripped primary front mount holes in big bearing cases with the engine assembled ? Any thing I should be careful of ? I have two holes that I am about to install heli-coils into, just wondering if anyone else has done this . Thanks, and God Bless !!!!!

JB!

It seems like it is always when the motor is assembled,
and usually in the chassis too.

So, it should be a straight-forward installation, right ? I've installed them many times, but not in something a crucial as this, so I am a bit nervous. Question about depth; Do I need to stack two of them, or is one enough ?
Thanks !!!! God Bless !!!!!

Can you use longer bolts to catch some good threads?

JB!

There is no need to stack them.

Be careful on those holes not to try to tap too deep or use too long a bolt as you can easily break through into the main crankcase opening which then becomes a difficult leak to seal due to crankcase pressure within! As Cotten said, one insert is plenty!

When I had my 51 torn down for motor mount repairs I found somebody had used primary bolts that were too long, thus busting into the flywheel area. No big thing since the cases were getting fixed anyway but still another WTF moment...
