another 65 frame question

#1

Post by 65eglide »

In looking over the forum, trying to find the correct numbers for a 65 frame
was wondering what would be the correct number on the top motor mount and the left side neck?

I would say the motor mount should be F 4 to F 5, they can be reversed, 4 F to 5 F. The left neck ID # should start with a C or possibly a D and four numbers.

The left neck# on mine is D4600. They are on the fork stop. mThere are more numbers up high on that side, but the instrument panel is covering some of them. They start 475... Mike

well the left side neck has "c5xxx" the top motor mounts looks like it says 4i ...thought letter came before number

there are other number left side front of the motor mount, cant read them looks like 4 numbers on top 2 underneath them.
also on right side neck forward of the front tank mount looks like a raised diamond that has either of or df inside it, next to it outside the diamond it says either 33 or 38 cant tell for sure since the frame was repainted

Mine is C50XX, the lower tree is C52XX, the mount id 4 H, built August 11, 1964, it is the 655 th off the line. Your SN should be a little higher.

If it is 4 I it should be September. Some years I don't think they used I.

1. For a 1965 model BT lower tree (also for 62–64 and 66–68) I would expect to see the ID stamped on the outside of the left fork stop but of course it could have been removed. If you find no ID you could post photos of the tree and we may be able to identify the year anyway or at least narrow down the range.

2. Regarding the letter I in BT frame date codes, thus far I have photos showing it was used for 1954, 56, 57, 58, 60 and 76. Bruce Palmer told me some time ago he has a photo showing it was used in 1962. I have no photos showing the letter M for any year frame.
3. Palmer states the date code is a number followed by a letter. For Panheads, author Greg Field refers to the frame build date but doesn’t commit himself re the format. The truth is that sometimes the letter was first and sometimes the number was first. And sometimes both formats were used in the one month—for example, I have photos showing 0 I (1960 September) and I 0 (September 1960). Was there a reason governing which character came first? I don’t know yet.

4. The 475 number mentioned by Mike may in full be 47591-35, with 47591 positioned above -35
5. Both upper rear castings: 47645-65
6. Lower left rear casting: 47653-58
7. Lower right-hand rear casting: 47651-58
8. Front engine mount: 47664-48, followed by a circled character and possibly then another number.

9. Quote: ‘there are other number left side front of the motor mount, cant read them looks like 4 numbers on top 2 underneath them.’
Can you please explain where these numbers are. What do you mean by front of the motor mount? Which motor mount do you mean?

no not ..motor mount, tank mount...front one ..underneath speedo gauge left side forward and just below it...looks like 47591 then underneath those numbers "38"

right side same spot forward and below front tank mount... diamond shape with DF inside of it outside and to the right of it "38"

I'll try and get a picture might be a little blurry, but will give you and idea on where these markings are.

Thanks for clarifying the location of your left-side numbers. I said above that the 475 number may in full be 47591-35 but you say you have 47591-38. I can’t tell from your photo but I’m thinking yours will end with -35, not -38. Please view the photo below which is of a frame made in September 1960 and it appears to have 47591-35:

Image

Next frame was made in March 1972 and the suffix still appears to contain 3 and 5 although it looks like the 5 is followed by the letter A:

Image

I don’t think that’s a diamond-shaped marking on the right-hand side of your steering head; I think it is a square. I’ve seen it on the left axle plate of a Big Twin rigid frame and it was accompanied by the number 8 and someone said the 8 was the number of the tooling that made the part. The next photo below is again of the September 1960 frame and you’ll see it has 33 alongside the square:

Image

Other BT frames I have photos of bear 37, 39, 41 and 45 in that position and they were made in August 63, Feb 65, June 66 and July 68 respectively. The March 72 frame may have 49 but the photo is not good so I cannot be sure.

For what its worth,

I have two frames dated A5, with a 39 to the right of the square, and the production numbers begin with C.

A third frame is installed, but believed to be a '66, and the production number starts with E.

65eglide, no offence meant but I’d like to see a clear photo of your left-side number. If you required a magnifying glass then I’m wondering if the number may have been damaged over the years and although it may appear to be -38 it is really -35. Can you post a clear picture please. And are you sure the frame is a 1965 model?
