50 wishbone frame
I got my mix match panhead tore down to a bare frame in order to rebuild it back as a correct 1950 FL. There are a couple of things I need to repair on the frame first though and I just wanted to verify that these holes are not factory, because Im going to get them welded up if they are not.
Also, the frame was powdercoated and I prefer the painted look. Can someone tell me a good paint to use on a frame and should it be gloss or semi-gloss. Thanks.

Re: 50 wishbone frame
Does anyone have any idea why the holes are there in the first place? Someone must have had some logic when the holes were drilled.

Re: 50 wishbone frame
I guess I need to get it sandblasted. Do I need to make sure the blaster takes it easy around the casting #s?

Re: 50 wishbone frame
G'day,
Don't forget there is a frame Tab missing there, you might think about putting it back on, its an easy one. For the throttle cable
If you do a seach JohnHD has a diagram with all the measurements somewhere here, if you're lucky Panhead might point to
it for you. He is one of the Wizards that knows where everything is.
Sandblasting isnt the servere.

Re: 50 wishbone frame
Powder coating is all most impossible to blast off, you need to burn it off first.

Keith!
The powdercoating need not be totally removed, only etched for the paint's mechanical bond.
Of course a lot of the true character of the frame will remain buried.
If you are fanatical about such things, a methylene chloride paint stripper must be applied and removed and applied and removed, etc... prior to blasting.
Be certain that the frame is completely stripped, including neckcups and forklock. Cork up the seatpost of course, and plug all threaded holes.
Note that some industrial blasting outfits, such as those that treat water towers or bridge abuttments, are "severe", using more aggressive media than silica.
Powdercoating has its time and place, but it has destroyed a lot of History in the name of Vanity.
....Cotten
PS: I hate paint too.
And oh yeah, "gloss", but no overcoat.

Re: 50 wishbone frame
old1955,
I am not aware of the tab missing and couldn't find a search bar on the site. Do you(or anyone else) have a picture of what you are talking about? There is a tab on the upper portion of the left downtube, but it is for the timer cable. I want to make sure to get everything fixed at one time.
cotten ,
will ZipStrip work to strip the powdercoat?
Thanks

Re: 50 wishbone frame
That’s because the 50 frame doesn’t have the throttle cable retaining tab. It uses a cable clamp that mounts to the upper motor mount. You aren’t missing anything. Bob L

Re: 50 wishbone frame
bob is correct!
the tab on the frame is a 52 and up feature.
that friction tape on the frame just ahead of the clamp probably helps too!
