I have this new belt drive that I bought in the 70's for my 76 FLH but never used ,its been in the box ever since. I had been wondering about getting a belt drive for my 59 pan and I noticed in J&P's catalog some belt drive ads say their 1959 to 1984 fit . The reason I didn't think to use this one is because the box says "fits 1970 to present" .I see Harley clutch hub assemblys have the same part # 37550-41B ,1941-1984.Then it shows 37702-70A" clutch shell and sprocket, with starter ring gear 41-64 -FL, FLH then on the line below it says 70-82- FL, FLH, FLH-80, 79-80 classic. all for the same part number. In Antique Cycles catalog it shows the clutch shell as 37703-41 fits all 41-84 big twins.. Since 59 shell has no holes for mounting a starter sprocket it would have a different part number.
I just went and measured them ,they are the same ( the belt drive is machined from one piece of aluminum with "hard coat surfacing" and has "4130 chrome molly steel (58 Rockwell Hardness) bearing inserts" The difference is in the depth of where the clutch plates go ,My 59 shell is 1 3/4 inch deep ,the aluminum one is 1 9/16 deep ,about the thickness of a disk. This shell has a bolt on ring gear which I wont need.
This is a "Sun Speccialties" product ,and heres their part list for their different belt drives, H-D 74,all 36-54 H-D 74, all 55-69 H-D all,70-present . under there parts list is a parts list for replacement belts,each model years take their own belt.. 36-54 won't fit 55-69 and so on. This belt drive is 1 1/2 inches wide .I'll send a photo .

I just reviewed my post here ,the photo is called court sample because I forgot ,and loaded it into a folder with court documents,This belt drive has never been to court lol.

I see no reason your belt drive unit won't work on yer pan. You won't be able to use the starter ring gear with tin primaries, but yer not usin an electric leg so who cares. I'm usin a belt set-up for 65-69. No problems....bosheff

If I dont hear any reason Why it wont fit my 59 pan I think I'll put it on and see what happens. As it is I dont have the clutch installed yet ,so I wont be pulling anything apart.

Motor sprocket shaft splines are the same for 55 and later, so yer all set. As long as yer runnin a 1959 sprocket shaft with a pre 65 tranny, you should be golden....bosheff

neilw, I too am running a belt. Had to modify my tranny plate(cut the stop back and elongate the 4 holes .140 for proper belt tension). Used the same plate on a prior frame and didn't have to. I think the belts are great.

Thanks , I bet thats why they say different years use different belts ,its probably got to do with the length.
