with the sprocket against the back spacer I can actually feel some grooves from the spline so if I were to tighten the nut to the sprocket it will hang up there causing some play as it will not tighten down this is why I think maybe spacer. I measured the spacer, i do not have a micrometer but it is 7/16" wide. I noticed a little wear on the outside edges of the teeth on the sprocket which makes me think the chain is not running correct to both sprockets so I am thinking spacer. What is the correct measurement on the stock 65 panhead spacer does anyone know ? maybe this is worn or someone used the wrong size spacer who knows how many owners this bike has had.

In my manual,it describes how to work out spacer size in Section 2B.
It gives method of removing plain and compensator sprockets,but only one selection of spacers.
They are all over 1/2" thick.
0.516"-0.546"-0.576"-0.606"-0.636"-0.666"

You shouldn't have any play in that shaft with or without the sprocket on.If have 100 FT LBS of torque on the nut and you still have play that you can feel,you have an issue with your bearing spacing.

A '65 question,
for Robbie and all the resident authorities,...
ViperSniper's photos show a modern primary chain tensioner "shoe".
They are biased in height from one end to the other, and originals do too.
My reference photo leaves it questionable.
Since these things may have been flipped many times in their lives,
which end faces the motor sprocket?
I favor the low end of the shoe, but my guess averages have fallen through the floor lately.

the book says you can invert the whole adjuster to accommodate different chain lengths and sprocket sizes,stating that the two upper holes can be used,so I guess it doesn't matter..

Even when juggling the assembly for other lengths of chains, you still have two choices for the shoe itself.
It can angle to the front, or to the rear.
In ViperSniper's photos with the one-piece aftermarket shoe, the high end appears forward (or atleast it did on my home PC).

When a chain is running over a sprocket the lower run tends to be thrown outwards by centrifugal force allowing a shallow loop to form in the lower run. The dropped edge of the adjuster shoe helps to guide it back up. If the edge is too sharp the chain will wear into it excessively. Hence the different radius on either end of the shoe.
