If we accept the premise that a tensioner won't just turn some horsepower into noise, and rad alterations are acceptible,
Then why did the author divert from his original comparison to the Indian tensioner? Memory fails, but I thought the Ks and early Sporsters had a similar shoe, supported by a simple arm on a pin.
The primary cover could be cut away at the footboard notch so that a carrier could be installed upon the frame tab (and possibly provide the footboard bracket as well). The carrier would have two tabs upward to support the pivot pin for the arm. The arm could then be springloaded with an adjustor screw placed on a short extension of the carrier toward the rear of the bike, supported by the frame.
It would take more effort than to build than to whack up existing parts, like the "cookbook", But the only permanent alteration might be to the inner the inner cover.
