Belt tension

#1

Post by white1j0 »

Anyone know how much tension should be on an inner primary belt drive belt, it's a 1 1/2" enclosed belt drive, running on a '52 Pan, It will only kick over without slipping when it is very tight, all parts are new,

It needs to have some play to it. It'll get tighter when warm. Are you sure its not the clutch slipping?

No, the outer primary cover is off, and the clutch hub is skipping over the teeth

BDL recommends 1/2" total up and down play for their 8mm & 11mm 1 1/2 " belt drive primaries.

I was taught that the tension is correct if you can twist the belt 90 degrees at the midpoint between sprockets.

When you think you have it right, go for a good ride then check again. I was really amazed at how much tighter it got. Subsequently I run my looser than I normally would have thought it should be when adjusting cold. But that's just me.
