Rear Chain ?
OK, stupid question....what size rear chain is stock ? I thought that a 520 was original, but all the o-ring chains seem to be 530. I installed a 530 and am having problems with it rubbing the inner primary. Thinking about trying to locate a 520 o-ring chain and trying that. Any thoughts ? Thanks, and God Bless !!!!

Re: Rear Chain ?
520 won’t fit. You do understand a 530 o ring chain is wider than a standard chain. Yes?

Re: Rear Chain ?
Yes, I know, Huck, thanks ! I am trying to figure a way to run an o-ring without the width of a 530 o-ring...
.....Has anyone ever run a 525 chain ? I found a pitch and inner width chart, 530 is 3/8 IW, 525 is 5/16, ( both are 5/8 pitch ), which is the width of my sprocket.... So, has anyone run a 525 ? Thanks !

Re: Rear Chain ?
You could try using a thick washer on the lower mounting tab for the inner primary for some extra room, it worked on my 51...Mike

Re: Rear Chain ?
Thanks, Mike, have tried that already. I am running a belt drive, (1.5 ") inside the tins, too far over and it rubs the pulley.....

Re: Rear Chain ?
Thinner sprockets would allow the use of 520 chain. If somebody made 'em, I'd buy 'em.

Re: Rear Chain ?
I run a belt drive and a 530 o-ring chain with my tin primary. Is the chain rubbing all the way around or is it just as the master link comes by? With my bike it's only an issue as the master link passes. I flipped the master link around so the clip is on the inside. I've also used the clipless master links where you peen the end of the pins.

Re: Rear Chain ?
I dont think O ring chains are that great, As long as you adjust and lube a standard chain properly, they are fine. I have found plenty of o ring chains that were abused, just because they are oring they still need maintainence. AdamPanJud wrote:Are there any negatives to using an O ring chain?

Personally--I dont use O-Ring chains!,--Have tried a few & cant get the mileage out of them!,--If your using your machine on weekends, thats another story!-If you ride everyday They(o-ring chains )dont last!--I think the seals trap road-dirt inside & it acts like a Grinder!--Just my exp. using -o-ring chains!--Respectfully---RICHIE

Re: Rear Chain ?
I don't even have a secondary oiler (was thinking about adopting an idea I saw here that used the former primary oiler hose (extended off the breather) of a primary belt bike, to oil it....but I get enough black grease splattered as it is. I'll keep putting the chain lube in the saddle bag on longer trips

Re: Rear Chain ?
Well for what it’s worth. I noticed O-ring chains have a lot of rolling resistance. With the rear tire off the ground spin the rear tire with O-ring chain tire stops quick but with a diamond chain wheel keeps on rolling.

OK, so let's see now. All of the manufacturers, and all of their engineers have come out with chains that we, the REAL experts know don't work. Man, we're all frickin geniuses. Well, not me. I'm an idiot. I use an oring chain on all my bikes. Mike

Re: Rear Chain ?
I don't use an O-Ring chain either. I love to tinker with my Pan and I don't mind removing my regular chain, cleaning it, oiling it back up and reinstalling it. I put a lot of miles on my Pan every year. That said I put a new chain on every year.
First its economics. I can buy 3 Chains for what it would it cost for an O-ring chain. Second, the O-rings, in my way of thinking, keeps all the dirty grease inside the link. O rings will wear prematurely if you don't keep up with the maintenance on the outside. And all that road grit grinding on the O-rings before you clean it. They are definitely not maintenance free.
