Bell Crank differences

#1

Post by panhead_kicker »

I've got two types of bell cranks for a clutch booster. If both are OEM, I assume one is the early 38472-52, and the other is later 38475-65. The dimensions are slightly different, and the non chrome has two holes toward the rod end.
Which is which? Do they appear OEM?

Original 65-67s have a stud in the top hole and uses a snap ring to hold the clutch rod on.

Is your 65 original? I remember reading somewhere about the two hole difference, but I dont recall anything about the other dimensional differences. Maybe Bigincher can shed some light.

LOL--- I don't know how much light I can shed, I am no expert..!
But I can take a look in my stash and see what I got.
As for the later years mousetraps, and the differences you are describing, someone like Robbie will have the answers...! :D

I looked at the two mousetraps I have, and both have a bell crank exactly like your chrome one.
I was curious about the 'correct' finish, so I looked through Palmers book--- only thing I found on that was the 'bracket' should be natural aluminum. No word on the bell crank, that I found.
Of the two I have, one of the brackets is natural aluminum, the other has been chromed (sigh).
So I can't say now if your chrome bell crank is OEM or aftermarket. We'll have to hear it from guys that have original boosters on their machines.
And I'm sorry, I can't be of any more help than that.

There are only two types of booster bellcranks, the '52-'64, and the '65-'67. None were ever chromed from the factory, they were cadmium plated. The only chrome ever used was on the cover which initially was a replacement accessory and later became standard. The early bellcrank only had one hole at the bottom for a bolt. The '65 type had a hole at the bottom and a stud with a circlip groove above it to raise the rod enough to clear the new cast primary covers. The bracket itself was always as cast aluminum finish except the earliest prototypes (late '51) which were steel.

Thanks guys. I found this pic of a NOS bell crank with two holes and its a -52. Apparently not enough difference to warrant a new part number.

The picture you posted is a generic replacement sold by H-D (note the AMF sticker) based on the late style with the pin left out to fit early units. Regretfully it is correct for neither! Common with later production of parts nearing obsolescence. OK to run, not to use for restoration!
