Clutch Hub: need to remove it

#1

Post by steve_wood »

Can't get the clutch hub nut off! Need to remove it so I can change the inner primary.

Here's what I'm doing:

- Clutch rings, basket, etc removed
- Engine compensating sprocket and primary chain removed
- lock washer tabs bent back flat against hub
- Transmission in gear
- 1 - 1/8" socket with small extension on hub nut
- 1/2 drive Chicago Pneumatic impact hammer set CLOCKWISE
- Air pressure at 125 psi

Nothing happens. The rear wheel isn't spinning, the impact hammer appears to be kicking the nut but it just doesn't budge.

I tried a breaker bar but that just spins the rear wheel; even when I'm sitting on the bike.

Sorry for the desperation. I looked in the knowledge base but I couldn't find any case where doing the above didn't work.

Any help would be appreciated.

It helps alot to have the primary chain installed. Put both tires on the ground in 4th gear. Use a clutch hub holder (an old steel drive disc with a handle welded to it). Use a breaker bar not an air impact wrench. Have someone sit on the machine with their foot on the brake pedal. Hold the clutch hub tool handle in one hand, turn clockwise with the breaker bar and socket with the other.
You can find this info in the Clymer book or Vol.1 of the M&O Guide. If you need tutorial help, either book will help. There's always a "used" copy of Vol. 1 or Clymers on amazon.
Don't hit your clutch studs with the breaker bar. You need a clutch hub puller too. Don't whack the end of the mainshaft to loosen the clutch hub.

Great, glad you got it off. I wondered if the four-tab lockwasher was installed under the nut? I would guess probably not, and Loctite red was used as a "lockwasher" instead. This is the second hub nut that's had loctite applied, and I didn't ask the first person if their mainshaft had the tang-lockwasher installed either.

try heating the nut with a propane torch.

someone may have put loctite on it, the heat will soften it's grip. then hit it with the impact while still hot.
