Rip Van Winkle's Clutch

#1

Post by Scrap »

About ready to wake up my 57 FL last used in 1979. Clutch would not release when kicking in gear. Plates are now sitting in brake cleaner. Should I replace with new? Will it fail prematurely from sitting so long?
Thanks.

I am curious as to why you would think that?
Unless it was stored in a particularly nasty environment there is no reason it would fail prematurely other than the normal end of its working life. Hopefully it had the original riveted plates, otherwise that brake cleaner may kill the bonding adhesive!! Then it would fail, but for new reasons, not age!

Scrap!

Scuff them with coarse steel wool (don't breathe the asbestos), tighten any loose rivets, and you should be good to go.

The tanged spring plate needs the most scrutiny.

I think it cause i never left anything sitting that long without using it. (and let's not bring up my sex life). The plates are not riveted, so we can add my mind to things that have not been used in a long time.

Everything and then some.

I'm lazy, and like walnut hulls at a hundred psi.

I've heard the springs don't do much. Don't they make plates without them? Should I be concerned.

Scrap!

I consider the spring plates to be highly desireable.
Even a tired one is better than none.

Pardon me for interupting, but...... are you referring to the spring-loaded dampener balls at the notch in the outer edge of the steel disks? From my perspective-- just a reader on this thread, sorry-- it looks like you might not have it clear the 'spring plate' Cotten is referring to.....
Just sayin...

Or then again, maybe I've got it wrong...! :)
