Sorry just add questions, but...

How do you know that is teflon,
and what is wrong with older-than-dirt?

Sorry, Cotten I misspoke so to speak. I meant the ones with vinyl, not bare steel on the outside. Nothing wrong with older than dirt, but I try to take advantage of the few technological advances that improve things.

Don't the vinyl (or whatever) covered seals have steel inside?
They ought to,.. or they will distort.

What is this technological improvement?

Thanks in advance,

I think the vinyl is supposed to provide a barrier between the steel and aluminum to help seal and possibly prevent corrosion that can occur between aluminum an steel. Thats just a guess.

Also the new seal is different than the one I removed as it has metal on both sides while the one I removed only had metal on the outside.

The seal you bought is fine. You don't need the blue "vinyl" seal. All the seals I've seen in recent years have metal covering the back side.

I have never seen an aluminum tranny case react negatively because a stamped steel seal was installed in it....bosheff

Ive done hundreds of trannys, never seen anything like what your describeing . If you install it useing the proper tools there wont be any problem ! NEW ISNT ALLWAYS BETTER just someones way of getting in your wallet . Dont forget to put ALL the parts back in when re-assembling.

Shucks, I was only gonna install the parts that looked nice and shiney and throw the other ones away!

Thanks for the words of wisdom

Panhead Ed!

I have some of the vinyl cased or whatever seals in my dead inventory, left over from when I had a modern partner, but they are smaller and real thin for some obscure modern model.

If such a design was the right size for our four-speeds,
I'm sure it would be just fine.

There is a blue "vinyl" (I don't think it's actually vinyl but more like a paint) covered seal from James that is sized properly for the 4-speed case. It's works just fine. I've used them with no problem at all. I just think there isn't any reason to go in search of this seal over the one pictured above.
