Generator Support Strap

This is the strap that circles the generator and bolts to the engine block. (Not the strap that covers the space where the brushes are). There are two types listed in the parts manual:

30025-30 for WG models and sidevalves

30026-36 for OHV

I've also seen listings in various places that differentiate by saying for "3-brush" or for "2-brush".

Here's my glitch: My frame and engine are 1956, but my generator is 1965 (12 volt).

So which strap will fit? Is the difference due to the mounting points? The diameter of the generator?  Both?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Steve!

You want the OHV strap it would seem.
Flattys had different cases, and dimensions.

Next, the 65A uses 5/16"-24 bolts,
so if your case bolt bores are still 1/4", you will need to install 1/4"-24 Helicoils into the generator to accomodate the smaller original bolts. (No special tap is needed!)

If your cases have been hogged out for the larger bolts, you are on your own for alignment problems.

My own experience is that the shimming beneath is the major concern with any installation, for gear mesh, and the strap only dampens shock from bumps.

Here's what it looks like. I think that the T-bolt attaches to the engine mount tab and a screw goes through the hole on the other end and attaches to the front of the left or right case. But I'm not sure about this....

Anybody have a picture of one that is mounted?

Yes the screw goes into the case behind the generator. The stud goes into the saddle. My question is, How do you check the gear lash? just by ear? or by removing the front lifter block? Just curious as I have some noise in the gearcover area and shims under the generator have had no effect...Mike

Gear lash should be static determined by the cam cover bolts,.

Does anybody have a parts book for 1965? If yes, what's the part number for the strap?

My -65 Parts book only lists one strap, 30025-36, for all OHVs through 1957.

Thereafter, they used the 5/16" bolts with no strap, nor shims.

Years and years ago I desecrated my '50 Pan engine by drilling it out for the thicker bolts, then mounting a 12-V generator. The clamp is gone, but I still use the shim. Now the generator has the aftermarket electronic regulator. Everything is 12-V. Would I do all of that today? Not sure. Do I wish I hadn't done it back then? No, as it works like a champ. That and the Spyke electronic ignition.

12V is great, but nobody must drill their case anymore.

1/4"-24 Helicoils fit into the generators perfectly, with no tapping necessary.

Its a good idea to shim and strap with 1/4' bolts, but your 59's 5/16" bolts do fine without support.
