Transmission Plate

Hello :
Are the alignment bosses on the bottom of the trans case wider by roughly .125
or is there a difference in the width of the mounting plates .
The trans case is a 40 or 50 has the vent on the case raised cast code B-0
I am trying to use a plate with the threaded front hole 3/8 fine and it won't fit in the slots .

thought I'd ask before milling anything .

The early and late plates are the same in respect to the slots. The later plate is the one with the threaded front taps. The two front holes are also wider on the 58 and up. I also own a defective one with the same problem you're having. Time to get it in the milling machine and off to Fleese Bay with it. You can almost be certain that it's after market. I mean it never would have left the factory on a bike like that. Bob

I have attached pics to show you the plate and the case .
This plate is supposed to be from a 1965 . but as you see the trans doesn't sit in the slots properly .

If the plate is from an electric start bike the slots are not finish machined as the electric start tranny case has no ears for alignment. They align using the primary covers. You need an earlier plate.

Rob, So your saying that the electric start tranny didn't index in to the plate at all? I've got another one here with the same problem but is well used. I could never figure this out. This answers a lot qestions. Bob L

That's what I'm saying Bob. After the advent of the electric start tranny the slots were no longer a locating point for the tranny so were left unfinished, that is why an early tranny won't fit them. .

Thanks Rob, Besides my 96 FLHT, I've never owned anything pass 1960 with the exception of the mini-bike (1965 XLCH). Bob

The slots in the trans plate were to allow the transmission to move back and forth to adjust the primary chain. With the 1965, Electra-Glide, the primaries were aluminum, the tranny was fixed to the inner as was the chain adjuster. Adjuster was moved up and down to tighten or loosen the chain. Still the same on modern Harleys.

Well Its is a 65 plate so I guess I will try to find an earlier one that is machined for alignment.
That explains the rough sheared cut on the slots now.

After seeing this thread, I remember having to grind on my aftermarket plat to get it to fit better and allow the transmission to slide in the slots.
