1965 trans in a 1952 Panhead?

I have a 1952 Panhead with a 1958 Duelglide frame. I need to replace the transmission. I have a 1965 transmission P/N 34703-65 that I want to drop in it until I can rebuild the original one this winter.

I noticed that the 1965 trans does not have a tapped hole in the back for chain tension adjustment. This would make sense because in 1965 there a chain tensioner in the primary housing. There is also tapped on the face near the output shaft. I assume these are to fasten the inner primary cover.

My question is, If I get a 1965 inner and outer primary cover and a 1965 chain tensioner will the 1965 trans work on my bike. It looks like it will, but if someone could verify this before I shelled out hard earned $$$ for a 65 Inner and out primary cover and a tensioner it would be great.

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

The 65 if stock will have a longer main shaft, which throws things out of alignment with the motor mainshaft gear. You would have to replace it with the shorter shaft. Inner and outer primary covers aren't cheap either. By the time you do all that, you could have bought another tranny. My opinion is rebuild the original now and save your self time an money

Thanks for the quick feedback. Is it possible that the output shaft from my 1952 trans would fit in the 65 trans?

Either shaft can be installed in either case, but the later case is inappropriate because of the lack of an adjustor, and the ears for the aluminum primary.

So if the short shaft is serviceable, you could take the rest of the '65 internals and shim them into the early case.
By the time that you have gone to such effort, you might as well have just rebuilt the '50 tranny in the first place, (as Panhead Kicker suggested,) and shelved the '65 assembly for another machine.

Thanks I'm convinced... Now to decide if I buy a new trans of try to find parts to rebuild existing. The main case of the old is cracked and it also had some internal damage so it may be less costly to file a used or rebuilt one.
