Starter clutch gear pain: mainshaft clutch gear won't go off

I am helping someone at work put new starter gears in his 48 pan we are trying to get the mainshaft clutch gear off it won't move with a 2 jaw puller, anyone know if these are always that hard to get off?

Shaker -

Yes, they are. Always. And, each one is different to deal with. Be real carefull around the end of the mainshaft, as the walls are weak, where the threaded end sticks out. Put something flat against the end, rather than allowing the tapered end of the puller stud to center in the hole. You'll split the mainshaft end. Tighten the 2-jaw puller against the gear. Use a small c-clamp to hold the jaws together, if needed. Then, use a piece of brass and a hammer to rap against the head of the puller. Not too hard. Just good solid raps. It will pop the drive off after a few.
