4 speed trans
when i shift into 3 gear it pops out like it doesnt hook. was thinking it could maybe the shift fork ?? anyone else have this problem i havent torn into it yet

Also check that the 3rd / 4th shift clutch was not inserted on the mainshaft backwards. But it most likely a shift fork problem. Bent, loose or misaligned.

No, only when you pull the shifter drum out. Make sure you don't have excessive play in your shifter linkage first before starting to pull things apart.

If you loosened or removed the large slotted screw holding the pawl carrier to the top you will need to re-time the shifter assembly.
