No 3rd gear

#1

Post by DaveAus »

Hi,

I've just got my 52 Panhead up and running and I went for my first ride on the weekend.

The bike is a foot change bike and I can get first, second and fourth gear but nothing in third, it just like shifting into neutral. Changing down I can get all four gears but not while changing up.

My guess is I have a problem with the shifter shaft but before I pull the tranmission out I thought I'd see if anyone else has experienced this before.

Thanks
Dave

Shifter fork spacing could be off, shift drum could have too much end play, ratchet pawl adjustment not right, or some combination of these. Check the easy stuff first. You haven't seen inside the box on this one yet have you Dave.

I would check the timing of the drum in the ratchet-lid.While in there Make-sure the PAWLS & SPRINGS are in good condition.--Sharp Pawls & no broken springs.Check shifting forks & make-sure both hats are present. Can you go from 2 to 4 by passing right over 3rd?-----Or is it a Hard time on your foot to pull it up to 4th?----Respectfully Richie//---Sorry--I see Rubone was fast on the trigger

I need to get the back wheel up and have a play but it goes into gear fine and then up to third and nothing and then up another one up and into forth.

Coming back down all the gears are there but I cant tell when Im riding the bike if the rachet is clicking in each time I push the lever.

Its a bit of a mystery at the moment

I got out into the shed last night and I was able to find 3rd gear.

The issue is I have to lift the shifter up to the bottom of the mouse trap to get it to engage.

I'll pull the inner and out primary off and have a look at the ratchet mechanisim first.

Daveaus----Before you rip her apart--Do you think the Mousetrap is not set correctly???--Just throwing it out there As You get third /but with force!-& Downshifting you get third without any problems.Maybe something to give a LOOK-SEE before you teardown.----Respectfully---Richie

Hi Richie,

I think I have the mouse trap set up pretty well and I have no crunching, grinding or dragging.

I'll make sure the ratchet is timed properly before I pull it out as I want that to be my LAST opion.

Cheers
Dave
