Hand shift detent setting
I'm converting my '59 Duo Glide to hand shift with all Harley parts. I just finished refurbishing a hand shift trans top and there's one thing I couldn't find in my service manual. How tight do I set the screw on the shift cam detent ball? If I bottom the screw, I can't move the shift lever by hand (the lever on the trans, not the shifted lever). Is there a spec for screw height? Is it a matter of feel? If so, what should it feel like? Thanks guys.

Thanks, Jerry. Do I then stake the threads to keep the screw from backing out? There are center punch marks around the hole suggesting that had been done before. Where did you find that spec? You would think that would be something the MOCO would include in the service manual.

I'm surprised that no one wants to chime in on how the screw is retained. Surely, with all the experienced members on this forum, someone knows.

You already know...
The plug was staked at original assembly. The plunger could be adjusted for more or less tension (based on personal feel) and was re-staked as necessary.

Don't forget that today we have 'threadlockers' like Loctite products, and your casting need not be distressed further.
