Generator gear teeth

#1

Post by jbgoodner2 »

Ok, this is nuts !!! I just checked V-Twin catalog to see which generator gear fits what, and it says that my '62 should have a 13 tooth gear, ('58-'69), however, it is a 14 , which they say fits 1937-1957 !!!
Looking up idler gear, it says;
VT No: 12-1388
OEM No: 25775-36
Cam chest idler gear.
Order shim separately to fit.
Fits:
EL 1936-1940
FL 1941-1969
????!!!!!???? :?
I would think that the gears with different number of teeth could not be used with the same idler gear.
The 14 tooth gear came with the generator, have no idea what became of the old one, gave it away I guess...Have run it for 3 or 4 years....could this be the reason that my generator has whined kind of loudly? Years ago I had a generator gear disintegrate and shear off the oil pump drive gear, (hydraulic lifters saved my engine, IMMEDIATE notification of oil pressure failure !), so I am understandably nervous about trying a different gear....any thoughts ? Thanks !!!!

The 14 tooth is for a Sportster . The generators are the same, 13 tooth for a big twin.
