Gear shifter is slipping

#1

Post by steve_wood »

So it looks like the foot shift lever from 52 to 53 was splined. In 54 the moco went to a smooth outer and inner lever system.

Mine slips no matter how tight I make it.

Any suggestions?

Are either of your pieces chrome? OEM or aftermarket? Slot in the arm clear? A picture would help.
Basically the splines were eliminated in order to help save the internal parts of the tranny, they would slip before they broke things!
If both parts are clean and dry they should hold with normal bolt tension. If chromed or worn badly they will not have enough friction to hold. If the arm is stretched at the hole the slot can close up before the correct tension is reached. Sometimes a slight filing of the slot will allow a little more clamping action to occur.

Yup they're both chrome. Did I mention I hate chrome? There is a slot in the arm. I filed out the slot a bit, and the gap does not close completely. But it still doesn't clamp properly.

Know where I can get some decent parts, oem or aftermarket?

Could you drill and tap it for a set screw? And then put a corresponding flat or dimple on the shaft? Mike

MAYBE a little more work with the file!--remove all chrome in the way & use new nut & bolt!--Make slot wider.,Also Someone mentioned a set-screw!, IT will work!, But if you dont have to drill & tap DONT!--DO it olny if you are out of options!--RICHIE 8)
