Been digging a little more in the far dark corners of the shop and pulled out some more Dixie NOS shit that's needed for the Shovel build ...

Image

Both these piston set are 3-5/8" Big Bore .. That will take the cubes to 98 inches ..
The S&S will be the ones I'll use cause they are NOS Manley's ...

Image

Got lucky with finding a Dixie sprocket shaft that's the correct year model ..
Not so lucky with the pinion shaft cause it's made for the 58-72 side oilers ..
I can convert it to a end oiler easy enough and use it ...

And also came up with some Mid USA Big Bore Jugs ...

Image

They will do alright for the 98 incher ...
Really would be super nice to have Trock or Attell jugs, but did catch these on sale a while back and had em sitting for this build to come full circle ...

Now "IF" I can find some photos of the scooter this motor will have a home in ... ??

More digging in the parts stash and found these Nos Dixie lifter blocks ..

Image

Was needing some for the build, more digging and I ran up on some more blocks ..

Image

These been chromed ..
Not really after the shine with this one ... But, since they're in hand they will get used ..

Starting to feel like Christmas morning .. :D

Going to need special bolts for these late tappet blocks cause the case has 1/4-24 threads

Had these for awhile, been dual pugged, will need to bore them for the Big Jugs ...
I'll get a better look at all the needs when they get took apart..

Image

A few fins are broke, guess I'll be welding them back up ...
Overall from what I can see, they will work the best for this motor build ...

Ran a program just for shits & giggles ...

Not bad at all ... :o

Image

Got Rowe's Cast Iron guides that are still runnable in em ..
Do think I'll get new valves and springs, these are still in great shape and can be reclaimed, but do have untold miles and age under the belt on them ...
So KPMI stuff will be ordered ..

Image

Was going to get a jump on the headwork ... BUT

Think I'm getting old, can't lift the freaken Boring Bar up to the Roll-over stand ... :?
Going to capture me a "Bubba" to help get the Bar onto the stand ..

I'm set up to do the first of three cuts ...

Image

I normally take three cuts to bore the heads, 3.800" diameter, 3.850" and final size 3.879"..

Only thing needed at this point is a "Bubba" ...

Let the chips fly ....

Image

Need to do the motor case too ..
But can't until the case stud bolt kit gets here ..
Two of the studs will be cut when the holes are bored ..
Must have those two case bolts in place when I bore the case ...

Hummmmmmmm .... :?:

Got to the point of seeing what the needs are to fit the pistons to the bore ...

The S&S Nos pistons are the 1800 Series and requires .0025" min clearance ...
Well Sir, they fell right in ...
Most always the jugs will be a few thousands undersize ... Not these !!
Hadn't got around to setting up a dial-bore gauge to see how loose they are ...
I don't want to knurl brand new pistons to attain proper clearance ...

Maybe I'm getting shook over nothing and the Taiwan Boys put the bore right on the money .. ??
.... Soon to find out ....

Wonder if I could come up with some .010" oversize 1800 S&S pistons "IF" shit does hit the fan ??

Oops ...
That 0.0025" min wall fit is not the right speck for the pistons I'm going to run ..
S&S has two diff. 1800 Series pistons, one has slots on the oil ring groove, the other has holes ..
The holy ones require another .001"

Image

The specks for the holy 1800's are .0035" to .004" close fit, loose fit is .005" to .006"

The Taiwan jugs are at .....

Image

Now how in the hell did they know what pistons to finish the bore at is anybody's guess . :) .

Gotta love that ...

And the lowered return oil holes ...

Image

That's a bit of work to do on stock jugs ...

I once read that cylinders were to bored to the correct oversize spec, and that the pistons should have been been manufactured undersized enough to provide the proper clearance. Well in theory at least, and no doubt for standard replacement parts only. But we all know that for a performance build the holes usually get bored to fit the slugs, no?

I like to hone to final size ... That way I have final word on what I want the wall fit to be ..
These jugs having the correct wall fit, out of the box, was a flute to say the least ...
This don't happen very often .. One in a hundred ya might say ..

The way I'm looking at the fit is ....

Dat ^^ bout sums it up ...
