Hot starting
I have started giving the 60FL a shakedown after being rebuilt. Engine ran fine initially but started running a bit rough and wouldn't start when hot. It appears to be running a bit rich on both cylinders so I have changed plugs. Compression test gave good readings and I rejetted the carb to what it should be. All ignition components are new.
I checked timing and found it had moved a fair bit and was retarded (electronic with manual advance). I put the timing right but haven't run it again yet until I do a manifold pressure test. Is there anything else I should check while I'm at it?
This might sound like a stupid question but is there any chance of blowing the valve seal off the guides when presurising the manifold up to 10-15PSI to do the manifold check?

Re: Hot starting
Stuey,
seals on the valve guides?, do your pressure test with both the intakes closed and it should not be a problem. it probably would not be a problem anyway if whatever kind of seal you have on there was put on correctly (Chevy?)
what kind of carb are you running. If its a Linkert they start better hot if you use a bunch of throttle, open 'er up, see if that helps.

Re: Hot starting
Thanks for the advise Mike. I'm running an S & S Shorty. It was starting no problems i.e. first kick cold and a few kicks hot and then just decided to not start hot after a short ride. If I leave it a few hours it will start no problems. Can a low battery cause thie problem i.e the battery has just enough charge to get her running but drains it enough to not have enough in it to start it a second time? The battery was new but sat around for 6 months while I was working on the bike. It probably hasn't been on the road enough to recharge properly.

Re: Hot starting
Stuey, check your battery voltage first, both before and after riding. See if the generator is charging. You might try checking the coil resistance, primary and secondary, cold, then hot.

John

Re: Hot starting
Thanks John. I had the battery on charge yesterday and it's holding 13.2 volts now. I'll see what it;'s showing after the next ride as you suggest. Just gotta do the pressure test first.

stuey,
i have found with both my linkert equipped bikes if they are too rich on the idle circuit they are hard to start hot.

Re: Hot starting
Any suggestions on jetting. Currently have it set at 0.0295" intermediate and 0.068" main. Engine is pretty much standard mechanicaly apart from a B grind cam.
Thanks.

Re: Hot starting
StueyC,
You said that you put the timing right due to being retarded. Do you pressure test then run it to see if by advancing the timing cured your problem before chasing other things.

Re: Hot starting
StueyC I have a super E on my pan and those are the same jets I run in my carb, and I have never had a problem with it being to fat. I run an A grind cam in mine. Just my 2 cents. Scott
