First start of Rebuilt Engine Question

#1

Post by panzer45 »

Hello all,
Hopefully this week I'll be installing my rebuilt flathead into my Servi-car. This is the first time I've rebuilt a Harley engine. So my question is, the oil lines that come off the oil tank, do they need to be primed//filled with motor oil. Or do they fill themselves with out any kind of priming. I added about 1 pint of engine oil to the crankcase during assembly and confirmed that the pump is primed and moving oil. Being that the oil lines are so long, that's alot of air to move out. I just want to be sure.
Thanks in advance! Have a safe Memorial Day!

Only one line may benefit from priming, the feed line. You can do this by cracking the fitting at the pump until some fluid begins to ooze out, then tighten the fitting. you my also want to kick the motor through a dozen times with the spark plugs out to prime the internal oil passages.
The other two lines are an empty venting internal pressure balancing tube, and the return line to the tank, neither of them need, nor benefit from priming.
