45" WL Rear Chain Specs

#1

Post by jschmidt425 »

Hi all,

Doing parts research...the chain coming off the old bike I'm restoring has 96 links and due to its age and general unknown condition was going to replace it to be on the safe side.

From reading other topics on here, I think the stock rear chain (part 40028-15) is a 530 pitch with 102 links? Can anyone confirm that is correct for a 45" WL? I'm not sure why my bike had one that much shorter but I'm assuming if there is slack I can take it out with the adjusting screws.

Thanks in advance for advice!

I always buy the longest chains and shorten as needed. A 110 link chain costs the same as a 102, or a 96. 45s generally have a 17 tooth transmission sprocket and a 41 tooth rear, however fronts were available in 16 and even 15 tooth configurations. Standard chain with a master link is easy to cut. Don't try to stuff an O-Ring or X-ring type in there, it won't clear the end cover. And you will not have enough movement in the adjusters for a 6 link discrepancy.

Don't be afraid to buy an over length chain and cut it to size
