dye in gas
For Cotton and all you good people who have used dye. Would like advice about dye in the gas to be able to check bubbles in the clear lines. What kind to buy, where to get it and one that will not need a light to check. Thanks for your help.

Re: dye in gas
You can add a little modern two stroke oil to your gas, most of it is purple and will tint the gas and will not affect the bike in the least. Actually works as a bit of top end lubrication.

Re: dye in gas
Its about checking air bubbles in fuel line after w.o.t. Maybe a vapor lock? Seems to run out of gas after 2 miles at full throttle. Everything else is in order. Ideas????

Re: dye in gas
Wow, two miles @ WFO on a trike?
Gas tank not properly vented?
If it had either a hard line, or rubber, the bubbles would not be visible.
Also a cheap aftermarket fuel valve without enough flow capacity can do it too. I've seen this happen on a dyno where the motor runs out of gas on the top end.

Re: dye in gas
drag pipes? no back pressure, needle and set float bowl empties from sticking float dragging on side of bowl when going down on fuel used ,test bottle with quart of gas hooked straight to carb would help diagnosis problem strap on and ride the 2 miles if problem goes away look to cap and petcock as Roo dog suggested and running out of gas at the top side lean condition you are slowly cooking pistons away

Re: dye in gas
Try to open up mixture screw to allow more fuel as you are driving. Could be running lean? Larger jet size?

Re: dye in gas
you are still saying you believe it is running out of gas correct? you have not gave a recoop time from setting their till it will run again is their one? if so your float bowl is emptying and not being replaced with proper amount of fuel while running down the highway, also you can go to big with jets and then your problem is gas washing the cylinders at low speed washing the fine film of oil the pistons need for cushion to keep from ruining cylinders, take mikuni off find a known good carb and go from their if that solves problem then you know it was carb, what are homemade baffles ? easyrider mag back in 80,s and hand me down trick is to take a 1/4 inch bolt that will sit in pipes sideways most have a drilled hole about a 1 inch back from end stack a nut washer nut washer on bolt and tighten it all up ,all you wont to do is interrupt straight line flow this creates turbulence and should and most always will run fine, what kind of air filter are you running ? is it to compacted for the 45 cu. inch if so put what it came with back on also, are you running bolt on bird with bug screen if so to much air flow , if you are not careful and keep experimenting you are asking for a top end sooner than you think, back to fuel line is it 1/4 or 5/16 rated for gas and oil it will have 2 to 4 braids of white looking and the cut end if not fuel and oil rated it could be collapsing from heat cutting fuel flow off......good luck hope you solve issues

Re: dye in gas
petcock ? take from run position when it starts running bad to reserve it has lower hole if this does it petcock is bad, or turn off and go back to run

Re: dye in gas
I had this happen back in the '70s. It turned out to be the fuel shutoff on the top of the OEM tank was working it's way down as I rode and after a mile or 2, it would as your's is doing. Good luck, Seadub

Re: dye in gas
I took a spring from an old school ink pen and stretched it out and put it under the cap of the fuel shutoff rod. It held the rod up and that fixed it. I could not look at it and tell it was slipping down but the rod was actually touching the bottom enough to reduce the fuel flow. Seadub

Re: dye in gas
A clothespin clipped under the fuel shutoff when switching to reserve is an old trick. Make up a story when not used and clipped to handlebar. I would drain the tank into a can first on regular, then reserve. Then remove the cap and blow air backward thru the line, both reserve and regular, and repeat draining, see if there’s improvement.
