Trouble lacing 18" front wheel cross-2

#1

Post by jschmidt425 »

Hi all, can anyone confirm the spoke lengths for an 18" front wheel, or spot what I'm doing wrong in the picture below? I have an original rim but bought reproduction spokes to relace the wheels. I have the long end laced cross-4 with no issues, but the brake end the spokes seem too short to do the cross-2 pattern. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

The dimpling of the rim is different on the brake drum side ; you may have to flip the rim over & maybe only cross 1 on the drum side.

Another thought is the direction of the spokes. With some hubs the two inward rows of spokes go in the same direction, with other hubs, they install is opposite directions. I do not know about your hub, but at one time I had a K Model one side front brake hub I laced to a 21" rim, but that was too many years & beers ago to remember, and since then I have stuck with cast alloy wheels.....

I called the vendor today and was able to confirm the spokes themselves were too short - should have been 6" but were 5.5". Hopefully the new set they're sending will solve the issue!

Keep us posted with the name of this good vendor if all works out well, please.
