32E Armature Models

#1

Post by jschmidt425 »

Hi all,

While disassembling the generator on the 45 flathead I'm rebuilding, it became apparent I'd need a new armature - the old one had severe rust & corrosion and after finally getting the gear off and the shaft removed, the shaft had deformed.

I bought a replacement armature for a 32e, but it seems to be a slightly different spec. From some research and pic comparison online, I now have this model: https://www2.vtwinmfg.com/generator-3-b ... ure-1.html when previously this model was installed: https://www2.vtwinmfg.com/generator-3-b ... ature.html

Does anyone know the correct components to install? The old style had 3 shims, the bakelight washer, and the spacer exactly from this diagram: knowledgebase/article?k=372 but I'm not sure what is needed with this new one - it for sure completely binds though with shims installed.

Is this the correct blueprint for later models? https://www.hydra-glide.net/kb/parts/41 ... 51_049.php If so, it looks like I don't need any of the spacers/shims/washers, but do need one other gasket on the other side of the grease retainer.

Appreciate any help/insight! thanks in advance.

I think I got the armature question all sorted out - in the end, the spacing of the gear to frame is still correct without any of the shims. If anyone could confirm though I'd still appreciate it.

I had another generator related question - what is the correct way to rivet the pin for the generator gear? The pin slides in with no resistance so I'm assuming I need to either peen it with some kind of punch, or peen it before installing on an anvil? Haven't done that before so if anyone has quick tips I'd be much obliged for the help.
