4 speed tranny in VL frame

#1

Post by rob.mat »

Hi
This is how I fitted a 4 speed into a VL frame. I have seen it done before - but this may be a little different. Where I have seen it done before, the tranny drain plug is in the way and needed to be modified - I did not want to do this.
The frame had been repaired previously, (badly welded) where breakage appears to be common place (at least I have seen it occur more than once). The area is arrowed in the picture. I started by cleaning up the welds and reinforcing the area from below by welding in some 1/4" mild steel plate then blending it in with a die grinder. This can be seen in the 2nd picture. Pictures are of the finished job.

On to the conversion - a picture is worth 1000 words, but as you can see:

Firstly the tranny adjusting boss is in the way - so it had to be removed.
The strap for the 5th tranny mount was fabricated from 1/4" x 1-3/4" angle.
This was welded to the old tranny adjusting casting on the frame.
A simple tranny adjuster was fabricated to finish the job
