Fiber on two-piece points too long?

#1

Post by Mark44 »

I'm getting close to having a running '45 UL and am about to install the circuit breaker I have. The breaker appears to be a '47-'48 breaker running the old style (two-piece) points. The points I have came from 45Restoration or from Flatland, but the fiber seems too long and won't allow the fixed point to come within .022" of the movable point when the fiber is on a lobe.

I didn't see anything about this in the KB. The obvious solutions seem to me to bend the movable point a bit or whittle a bit off the end of the fiber using a Dremel. Has anyone else run into this problem?

Picture would help, but both solutions will work. On a flattie, your base must, must be tight.
trust me, good luck and enjoy.

The points and timer changed in 49 from separate spring to spring part of points.
File fiber if to long, check points adjustment is working.

Right. I learned this the hard way with my '46 WL. If the spring clip isn't in the right position for the bale, the timer base doesn't make a good ground connection with the the timer shaft housing.

Right, which is how I determined that my timer is 47-48 -- i.e., new style with the adv/ret stud instead of the band around the time, but with the older style points.

I shortened the fiber about 1/8" and that seems to have done the trick. I'll be sure to add a tiny dab of grease on the end of the fiber.
