I cant believe I actually found a post in such a short amount of time relating to my exact same problem. I just went out to ACE Hardware and purchased a ball shutoff valve like the one in the string on eBay.
My 45 is installed in a chopper trike which I just restored. (it was chopped a long time ago so I don't feel bad, I am more of a purist) It has 1945 tanks, not sure on the frame, has a 1947 tranny and had a mechanical rear end which I upgraded to juice.
Just like the FlatheadMaverick this motor was never sumping prior to the restoration and all of a sudden it started. I thought it was the tranny as the oil was seeping out, dripping onto the chain and running down inside the primary cover and dumping the oil right under the tranny! Thank goodness I saw it before removing the tranny.
Thanks a million to you guys.. saved me hours of frustration.
Cheers
A complete checklist on sumping?
I want to make sure I don't miss something while frustrated

Re: A complete checklist on sumping?
Today, I gave the '41 some service.
So glad to have a petcock; disconnect the line below it and you won't have to drain the tank first..
