Front brake Shackle 45 -v- BT
The WLA part number for the front brake shackle is given as 4130-40. A certain well-known Arizonan supplier lists this part as -40 and -40A. Another supplier is advertising this part:
Or are they? Which is the correct part for a 46 WL?
If the XF-834F is wrong for a 46WL, anyone got a 4130-40 or 40A cheap?
This is the way the XF-834F is fitted to the bike:
It seems unusual to me that H-D would manufacture different parts for basically the same job when many parts for the BTs and WLs are the same.Or are they? Which is the correct part for a 46 WL?

The correct part is 4130-40, 4130-40A is for Servi-Cars.

Forging number ??????? I only want OEM parts on my bike!
Seriously, is the XF-834F for a BT, a 45 or both?

The shackles do not interchange. The Big Twin version (also used on WLC and Servi-Car) is offset the opposite direction than a 45. The tapped holes for zerks are different as well.

I’ve always thought they were the same forging with the zerk fitted in a different position to suit the different applications.
In the past I have you used the incorrect arm with an angled zerk to allow greasing.

I see that you have WLCs. Maybe you were using the shackle designed for the WLA. In Europe it must be a problem with a mixture of WLAs & WLCs coming from Western Europe from what the British Commonwealth and US forces left behind, but mainly WLAs coming from Russian army sources. Getting the correct parts for the correct model seems to be a bit of a problem. In Australia, we only ever got WLAs, so getting parts to fit used to be easy, until our major NOS supplier sold up and the parts went to the Four Winds.rocket ron wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 6:34 amI’ve always thought they were the same forging with the zerk fitted in a different position to suit the different applications. In the past I have you used the incorrect arm with an angled zerk to allow greasing.Ron
Since the bike involved with this problem is not a Concours d'Elegance competitor, I suppose that the simple solution will be to use an angled zerk.

Re: Front brake Shackle 45 -v- BT
Not so much about this thread, but related.
I have a extra part left over next to a 44 U I'm working on. LOL!
It looks like a locking tab P/N 44229-40 but I already have one on the fork tube side of the front brake shackle.
The parts I would have had off this bike are the gas tanks, hand shift linkage, the primary including the inner cover, and had the transmission out. Front wheel and fender off and the top parts for the steering dampener. Does anyone know where else a locking washer resembling P/N 44229-40 would be used?

Do you have a picture of it? Perhaps a brake cross shaft lock tab. Or a primary cover front mounting bolt lock tab, last used in '44.

Re: Front brake Shackle 45 -v- BT
I just installed a front fender on a U model and the stud in this picture is located in the position at the top of the L shaped slot on the fender bracket. Isn't it supposed to be in the lower portion of the slot and the keeper should be oriented so fill the gap in the vertical portion of the slot in the bracket?

Yes, it should be in the lower part of the slot. Are you using an aftermarket fender?PanPal wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2024 10:39 pm front fender mounting bolt.png
I was researching steering Dampener parts and came across this old post and photo.

No, mine is original. This is a picture Emu posted in the beginning of this thread. I just happened to notice this because I did the same thing before reorienting the keeper and getting the stud located at the bottom of the slot.
