I fitted/replaced the rear wheel bearings (1950EL) according to the service manual instructions. Before putting the wheel back on the bike I slid the axle thru the hub and thought it seemed sloppy. It was a snug fit on the star side at the thrust bearing sleeve but seemed sloppy the rest of the way thru the hub. When slid thru the left side axle sleeve it seemed to fit well also. Since both the thrust bearing sleeve and the left side axle sleeve are outboard of the bearings, shouldn't the axle bearing sleeve be holding the axle snug thru the hub? I wonder if I should have replaced it before fitting the new bearings. Thanks.

The axle through the roller bearing sleeve should be a loose fit, and not prone to wear since when the whole assembly is tightened on the bike, neither part spins. So as long as you got the right plug fit with the bearings to axle sleeve, and side play shimmed correctly, and rest of assembly correct, you should be good.
