48-57 Axle?

#1

Post by panhead_kicker »

Hi guys, I am trying to identify for certain an axle. It measures 11 1/16 " from end to end, including the nut.
According to Palmers pg136, (if he's also measuring from end to end) this axle would be for 48- 57 rigid.
A Duoglide axle would look very similar, but measues 11 1/2 in. So this is not a Duo axle.
Can anyone confirm this axle?

i can't give you a correct application.

however, most hardware is measured from the underside of the top/nut to the end of the fastener.

John ,
Since Palmer gave the 11 and change measurements, he must have been including the nut also, you think?

Al,
Yep, if you don't have the rear mounted up yet, a measurement end to end would be greatly appreciated.

I have one OE and it fits my knuckle.
I have the same in a repop and it fits my V-Twin '55-57 rigid frame. Never measured them. Never read anything about them in palmers book but I will and change any info or add any info. Both look the same, with that one step/ridge whatever in the near middle of the axle.

Yea ok i read it. That's a knuckle axle, but since they're the same length overall you can use it on a knuckle or rigid Pan.
In fact, it's fun to run a Knuckle rear axle on a rigid Pan, just so people will be able to say, "Hey, you know you have a knuckle axle on you Pan :?: " (like you committed a crime).

Pan-Kicker,

sorry it took so long to get back to you. I measured the axle, it's 11 inches from the "inside" of head to the end of the threads. the head thickness is 7/16 so over all the length is 11 and 7/16

Thanks LittleAl, sounds like you might have a duo axle there. Is it a spare , or the one you are mounting up?
Can you post a pic?

Sorry, it's all back together now. When you posted I just had happened to have my rear wheel out to put my rear fender on. Mine has the same head as yours and that small shoulder just under the head. and yep, it's the one I'm using in my '51 frame
