Star Hub Sleeve end play

#1

Post by panhead_kicker »

While doing my brakes, I found the lateral play on the roller bearing sleeve of my front hub to be .031. Service manual states .005-.007 is correct. Since the shims to correct this ( 43560-35 )are .002 thick, I will need to add about 13 shims to what ever is already in there to get to .005 play. This seems like too many shims to me. Is there a typical or max # of shims before I start looking at other parts in the hub assembly for wear?

There is a thick thrust washer in there as well. Actually two of them on either side of the tophat piece. Check them. Also often the inner sleeve wears into the tophat creating excessive end play. Check it as well. If you need to replace it you will find it changes things dramatically. And up to ten shims is not unusual.

There's news! My 58-68 parts book only shows the 43560-35. I'll take a look

If you gone that far, why wouldn't you completely dissassemble the hub, clean it all up and have a look at everything?
Besides, if you've got a bunch of grease in the hub (well, of course you do...) then there's a chance you'll be getting a false reading on the end play, which should be shimmed to .003-.005 while dry, and the star side cork removed. Once the end play is set, replace the cork and pump it full of grease, about 1.5 ounces.
I can also tell you that the only corks and paper gaskets that really fit are from James.

I don't know if they were ever an OE part,if they were they vanished by 1943,or an invention of the aftermarket industry to compensate for worn parts.
I agree with Bigincher,do it once and do it right. With everything correct,I'd prefer to use a thick shim than several thin ones.

Yup. That's where I'm at, Big.
NOS Thrust washer (43563-35) = .060,
mine don't appear to be worn.
Anyone know what the "top hat" thrust bearing sleeve (43556-35)thickness at the brim should be?
Mine = .188
(Ideally it doesn't appear that this part should spin much to wear)

FOLKS!---Everytime you change a tire for what ever reason, YOU SHOULD check the whole works out!--To me its common practice. And I know IM NOT the olny one!--Just common sense!---We have to if your star-hubs are REAL!, not conversion to bering.----RICHIE 8)

That part can develop wear over time, this is where the free play lives-- that's why the shims, to take up the play.
But yours at .188 is like new....!
I have several hubs apart, measured them all--- many read in the .172-.180 range, NOS measures .188.

Thanks Big. By that measurement, looks like my parts are fine. I'll be adding shims as required.
(I found I've got one spare thrust bearing sleeve that has the grooves worn off. Yours at .172 are probably missing the grooves too.)

Actually, the grease grooves are still there in my worn sleeves. They are still serviceable, and they are OEM. The difference is taken up by the shims. It's not uncommon to use the .007 or even the .015 shims. It's the end result that counts.

The sleeves you see without grooves are aftermarket replacements.
