transmission case identification
I know this is a panhead forum but Im trying to identify this tranny I got with my new 50FL. I am a novice but Here are my opinions. It is a 121-35, no date tag , It only has 4 mounting bolts and no vent boss . I believe early knucklehead case, maybe 36 or 37? I think the top and the kicker cover are later. notice the kicker cover has a vent boss but no vent plug. Thanks for the help.

Re: transmission case identification
Good call!--But from looking at pics. & YOU probably already know--this case needs a good going over(just on the outside for some cracks! The ADJ. screw is bent -may have thread damage-The rear according to pics. isnt to bad -But a real good cleaning & checksee for stress cracks is def. in order!-overall Nice piece!---58flh

Re: transmission case identification
I have a friend who is knucklehead hound, but has tons of panhead parts. He is always saying if I end up with any knuckle stuff, he is ready to trade. So any ideas of approximate value of this? It shifts good but haven't got in it yet. No evidence of cracks on case, but the studs need replacing and some corrosion repair on bottom needed. just wondering so I have a starting point for trading. Thanks.

Re: transmission case identification
I would need to see the side of the case where the countershaft cover is to nail down if it is Early, Mid, or Late '36/Early '37.

Re: transmission case identification
From page 282 of Palmer's book: "The first sub-type case, used on 1936 61 twins and early-1937 Big Twins, is equipped with only four frame mounting studs. It does not have the starter support bolt hole nor starter support boss as found on all later cases. Since the kicker cover is vented at this time, the case does not have a boss for a vent plug. Also, cases on early-1936 61 twins do not use an end cap over the countershaft and, consequently, are not drilled for the cap’s four mounting screws. All later cases through 1964 are drilled for the four end cap screws."
Notice the case below is not drilled for cap mounting screws:
Apparently all later cases through 1964 were drilled for the four cap mounting screws—for example, the one below which is the type of case apparently used for later-37-–38/39 (I have other photos of this case):
But judging by Chris' reply it sounds like he may be able to narrow it down even further so could you please post some photos as per his request.
