Frame: 1965?

Does the top engine mount on this Frame indicate Shovelhead?

I was told that this was a 65' PAN Frame...but have some doubts?

Yep that's a 65 and up but it's not the top motor mount (Which by the way you will find a date code on the right side.). The castings that the fender struts attach to are straight. 58-64 have a dip in them. Bob L

The reinforcement on the left rear leg did not appear until '68, the double hole blocks on the rear legs until '73 or so. The hole through the top front mount is indicative of a mid '70s Superglide tank mount. Show a picture of the right side of the neck, where the number block was ground off! And why are the head cups welded in? :?: Everything I see indicates mid '70s, including the hole in the neck web. Definitely not '65!

exactly! I wondered about the welded bearing cups myself but there were enough other issues on that frame that I didn't take the time to respond. Its a shovel frame no doubt

KB, at least some of your frame appears to be somewhere from 1970 to very early-1973 inclusive, although some things appear to have been changed.

1. A photo of the right-hand side of the steering head would help.

2. Your type of top engine mount was first used for 1970 models. And is that an L as Bob suggested? If so then what's the number after the L?

3. In your photo below, the casting number on the lower left rear casting looks like 47654 65. Is that correct? That number usually indicates 1965-72 although it also appeared on some very early-73 models. If indeed it is 47654 65 then the casting has been altered to some degree. For most 73 models the casting itself was changed and so was the casting number, becoming 47654-73.

4. What's the casting number on the outside of your lower right-hand rear casting? Is it 47651-58? From what I can see of that casting it is no later than very early-1973. But it appears altered to some degree.

5. The gusset plate attached forward of the left rear downtube was first introduced as standard fitment for mid/late-68 but was available as repair part 47261-68 for BT frames back through 58. In your photo below you'll notice a non-original piece welded near the top of the gusset. And also what appears to be a non-original piece welded at the rear of the central frame tube just above the transmission mounting plate area.

6. Two-hole blocks at the rear of the rear downtubes were first introduced for 77 models so I don't think your two-hole blocks are original fitment. Eric

HD frames were stamped to match motors starting in 1970, Why not take the guess out and check the vin code on the frame.

Give me two hours in my facility including the neck cups and believe me it will be a 65 and you'll never no it was ever touched. My earlier statments were based on could it be used as a 65. Speeding your right about the coil blocks on the down tube. Even the factory didn't do chicken scratch. Bob
