panhead, gear case cover

#1

Post by tschukojr »

i'am wondering about the pan cam cover, mine is an 8 rib ( 50 fl), and my old pan had the 4 rib ( 56 fl), and my palmer books , to me the way i read it say' s basically all the pans had ribs either 8 or 4 , but i see smooth covers on a bunch of em in the gallery, and right now, there's a pan on craigs list in maine, a 52, ( 20,000.00) and it has a smooth cover,, how common is this and are they from knuckle motors or was there alot of aftermarket covers like theese--- just curious ---thanks --- tony schuko

Your 8 rib is correct. '36-'39 knuckle were smooth, all others ribbed up to the smooth cover from '66-'69. Most smooth covers are stock ones with the ribs ground off. No aftermarket covers existed in the old days. Without a link to the listing I can't see what the one you are talking about looks like!
