I have two sets of cylinders of panhead.
Teach the meaning of these date cords.
Set of 1, 1-0 Front E Rear M 16-9
Set of 2, Front F D-4 Rear D 7-9

Is there a hole for oil return within the cylinder bore? (near the bottom) cylinders produced after 53 had this to help lube the bottom end rather than just running all the oil through the base trough back to the rear passage. So if there is no hole, they would be 49, with the hole 59.

Ron, for H-D Panhead cylinders the return hole inside the bore was there from the factory for 1953–65. However, sometimes you will find 1948–52 style cylinders which were later drilled by somebody to drain through the inside of the cylinder like subsequent years.

Can you post photos showing the casting date codes and letters. And if there are any other markings or identifying features anywhere around the base of the cylinders could you also post photos of them. Eric
