Cylinder head coding

Am I correct to assume that the letter refers to the month, followed by day followed by year?

Cylinder head coding

#1

Post by panz4ever »

Looking at my cylinders (61" motor), they are stamped (actually it is raised) with a letter, followed by 2 mumbers, followed by a dash and then another number. Am I correct to assume? that the letter refers to the month, followed by day followed by year?

Front has raised number of H 12 - 0; rear has raised number of H 16 - 0

I agree, I think you could safely say that panzr4ever's heads were cast on the 12th and 16th of August 1950.
My question is: Is there a good complete reference of all the casting codes? It depended on where and when and what particular part, coding formats varied. On some of the castings the alphabetic letter indicated the year, on others it denoted a month. Most of them avoided using the letters "I" and "O" for obvious reasons but this was not universal either.

If there is a good reference, I would sure like a pointer to it. And don't say "Palmer's", some of it is in there but its hard to dig out and its not complete.
