stuck breather gear help
Ive been tearing down my newly aquired '50Fl motor. Its completely apart except for the breather gear. Seems to be stuck in the gear case. Engine was sitting for 40 or so years. Wondering if there is a special tool needed or some kind of trick. I was under the impression it would just pull out. I don't really want to pry on it too much and bust the case anywhere. Anybody got any advice for getting it out?

kehughes!
Have you tried Kroil and heat?
I confess to once drilling a hole in the case to beat it out from the other side, and then plugging the hole;
It was a fossil.

It shouldn't be a rust issue as far as steel on steel rust anyway but the screen could certainly be rusted.I would get some Kroil or a similar product and soak her down and let it set.It really shouldn't come out that hard but you have to be carefull of scoring the bore so easy does it.good luck,keep us posted!

Re: stuck breather gear help
have tried some Kroil and heat but maybe didn't let it soak long enough. I wanted to reuse the gear. The teeth look very good on it. Trying to figure out the best way to grab it or pull it without damaging the gear or case.

Patience. Give the Kroil some time to work, squirt some more, wait. Repeat. Try something else, too, maybe PB-Blaster. But patience is the key.
If you can get it to wiggle just a little, that's a good start- then work on it from there, a little bit at a time. Good luck..!

Drill and tap the gear, insert threaded rod, lock with a nut, heat the case, use a weight (or slide hamer) on the threaded rod. I've been here before.

Re: stuck breather gear help
I GOT IT!!! More kroil , waited a couple of hours. Then alot of heat and placed a brass screwdriver on the gear teeth(figured I'd risk it) and tapped it with a hammer in an attempt to get the gear to spin. saw it move just a little and knew I could get it. lots of gummmy, oily crud. cleaned the crud as a turned the gear a little at a time, tapping. Finally loosened enough to work out. Inspected the teeth and still looked good. Thanks for all of you guys' help. lots of great ideas.
