Mike,

The 296A was recommended to me by the guy who did my engine work. I told him I was looking for easy starting, reliablity, and decent power. Based on that he recommended this cam. Now he might have been a little biased since he worked for Harvey Crane back in the 60's. But I've been real happy with the results. The setup meets all my expectations.

Craig

Were any modifications needed to install the 296A?

King,

Yes, the cam gear has to be modified if you are using it in a flat side (generator) bottom end. You can use it in cone motor Shovels without mods. See the instructions at: http://www.cranecams.com/pdf/327e.pdf Go directly to page 4 for details on the cam gear modification.
My cam was installed as part of a complete engine rebuild. So improved valve springs were installed and all the clearances were checked during the build to make sure valves weren't too close to pistons.

Here are the specs:

Open Close Duration Lift
intake 22° 44° 244° .455**
exhaust 44° 22° 244° .455**

**lift for Shovelhead, add 5% for panhead

Corrected lift for panheads is .478

You will also need to change to the needle type ( Torrington)bearing in the right case if you are running a bushing type cam bearing. I found out the hard way ,but the needle type should be better.

It is cheaper and safer to custom cut a bushing.
Needle bearings are one more thing that keeps later bikes from running forever like earlier machines did.
