Sifton 468S cam

Post by 3711 »

I am running a Panhead with a HD "H" cam.(I have the original 1951 cam stored) I also run S@S cast pistons that are higher compression. The motor is fresh and truth is,I'll be 65 this August and would like an easier kick start. I ran a Sifton 468S cam in a 58(shovel top) for a few years and it had so much valve overlap that a child could start the bike!(that was with a magneto locked at 35 degrees) Question is,will the 468S go into my Pan even though the rocker ratio is different? The cam never impressed me,but,it sure was easy to kick! Should a guy like me consider a low compression piston,or use the 468S?....thanks in advance....walt..tulsa,ok

3711!

If I remember(?), the "S" referred to its timing degree'd to accept the larger Shovel intake valves.
It would probably run with Pan intakes, but the full benefit would not be achieved.

I still have mine, but I "de-tuned" to the 440 ("Cobra") and re-gained some low end, and still enjoyed the easy kick, even with 86".

An old friend had a 468S in his bike and one of his tricks was to regularly start it with his hand. As Cotten says, easy start, some top end , but a bit doggy in the low and midrange. If you like to rev ( I do!) it is fine!
