Anyone have an idea of what could cause this kind of damage? (timer gear spindle cracks)

Is this a difficult repair, or should I expect to see other associated damage?

If it was indeed the plier goof nothing else will be hurt.If something (like a piece of bearing etc) got in there the gears are likely to be chewed up.Difficult repair? If you vee out the crack on the outside, install an old shaft and the screw and tack it where it is cracked its not too tough. If you decide to weld it up and start over then it becomes considerably more work.I have a tool I made years ago out of a scrap timing cover to hold that shaft in line while you weld the crack,it works pretty good.
