1965 crankcase vent
Does the 65 crankcase have a breather? Just got this bike and the inner and outer primary have been replaced with early style repops. I can't find evidence of the breather. The only thing I see is what appears to be a bolt (approx 5/16) inserted flush in the lower case. This can be seen through the lower inspection hole. I have been having problems with excessive case pressure. I thought all pans had to breathe. I've looked in the manuals and knowledge base but couldn't find anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 65 crankcase vent
Yes, 65s had a crankcase vent. It was a hollow stud kinda thing screwed into the crankcase from the rear. It had a port for the 3/8 size hose [at least one, maybe two] and a port for the little chain oiler hose.

Re: 65 crankcase vent
Thanks for the tip. I'll get it up on the lift so I can do more snooping. I have seen no evidence of hoses except to and fromthe oil tank. She's a belt drive conversion and my fear is someone just blocked the oilers and vent off trying to elim. oil leaks.

Re: 65 crankcase vent
If you are working without a manual on that bike, you're hurtin! '65's are a strange beast. Why would somebody block off the breather? It doesn't leak any oil, unless you have an oiling problem, or bad rings, or bearings. Let us know what you find. Mine was puking oil out the breather, and filling the primary with oil. Turned out to be a broken oil pump gasket.

Re: 65 crankcase vent
Instead of a hose, '65s had a simple 3/8" tube bent 90 degrees straight downward from a fitting into the right motorcase inboard from the pump. It emptied into the atmosphere, often blowing clouds of dust from below.
The fitting itself is shown on the far bottom left of the attachment.

Re: 65 crankcase vent
Here is the location of the vent , just under the right rear motor mount. I have a hose on mine and vent it to the chain area.

Re: 65 crankcase vent
I have had a couple '65s over the years.
Apparantly the early ones did not have a vented primary.
You would see them at stopsigns emitting a lot of smoke.
HD came up with a kit for fixing this and I installed them on two of mine.
Involved drilling. tapping and a nipple deal.
I have a scan of the original instructions if I could post it someways.

Re: 65 crankcase vent
SFMike!
I have never encountered any un-molested '65 that had a vented primary, including four of my own. (Unless you count the early ones that had no O-ring seal upon the the startershaft deflector plate. They vented through the starterhousing to draw in water!)
Come to think of it, neither did the two '66s that I have rebuilt.
Looking forward to the date on the instructions!

PS: Why would a sealed primary cause smoking at idle?

Re: 65 crankcase vent
I can't remember the reasoning for the smoking but have seen it.
It was only periodic.
This was about 1971 I got my 1st '65-only sold it recently.
Getting ready to restore one I been saving and add a hack.
Both these had unvented primaries and I vented them.
There was nothing special in the kit-hose and fittings.
The nomenclature of the kit is
Part no 63561-65
Ori 3-66
I have a copyof the paperwork I can send.
Took me a while to catch on, but it's never too late to learn new stuff.

Re: 65 crankcase vent
The reason I'm dumping my crank case vent to the atmos. is I am running a sealed primary ,like late mod. motors, works great.

Re: 65 crankcase vent
Instructions for chain housing vent are in Shop Dope nr. 4, bulletin nr. 538A, part number 63561-65, rev. 11-67. The bulletin says smoking at low engine speeds is possible due to low vacuum in the oil scavenging system. Greetings Duorien.
