Panhead trivia question?

#1

Post by Frankenstein »

Hey, got to talking to a buddy who has a 67 shovel apart on the bench and we started discussing the small oil screen that's built into the right crankcase on pans and shovels.
To make the long story short, my '65 pan has NO filter/screen in the right crankcase, like early pans. I always assumed that HD had dropped the filter in 65 and just hadn't paid close attention to other bikes 'till looking at the shovel engine the other day.
So, I check the 58-68 parts book, and as near as I can determine, they never made my engine :-)
Looking at things like parts number and fitment years for the screen, screen cap, etc.
My cases have matching belly numbers, valid engine serial number, 65fl7744, all that stuff is copacetic. so what gives? Doesn't really matter all that much, just curious.
Thanks, DD

It is shown in the 1959 - 1969 Service Manual:

Yup, the manual sure does show it. Never had a copy of that particular manual to check. So, how come my engine doesn't have one? strange, very strange.

DD!

All four-digit '65s have the screen, and I have encountered one or two five-digit machines with one.
(I have one with, and one without a screen.)

It was quite a mistake, and it was my impression that they reappeared in the middle of '66, with a different spring and screen.
Doesn't your fellow's '67 have one?

yes, the '67 has the screen, and my serial number is 65fl7744, so I guess it's one for the record books.
I always thought the serial number was "too cute", you know, sorta like "74" repeated twice, but the 2nd owner lives down the road from me, and he got it in 67 from the original "old coot" who bought it new. Definition, "Old Coot", those bikers who are our age now, back when we first got into bikes :-)

Just one of the many reasons, Folks,
that Palmer omitted the year from his restoration handbook!

They must of used leftover 51 right side cases when they built the last of the 65s to save money.:)
