Need to ask about fitment of shovel tappet blocks on a panhead engine.
The tappet blocks have these numbers cast/impinted on them
18601-73 FRONT
18611-73 REAR
Will they fit and work properly on a 58FL engine?
The ones I have has broken off mounting ears, and plenty of wrinkle black paint on them, and it is hard as a brick..........so, once I get the paint off of them, I can see that markings are on them.
George Greer
PS, I am planning on using Andrews J cam, and solid lifters.
Thanks

Re: tappet block fitment
OK,
Started disassembly of the engine..
Rear Tappet block has this number on it: 18611-73 on the flange.
Front tappet block has this number cast into it, (not on the flange): 18600-53 (original pan).
George
PS, both cylinders are at .070" OS, and the rear has scoring in the bore, along with the piston, which is pretty scuffed up.

Re: tappet block fitment
It is pretty straightforward to countersink later blocks for early screws. As Cotten has pointed out many times, pistons are available up to .100 over but proper torque plates are a necessity to bore and hone correctly. But what caused the scuffing? Carefully document everything on the dis-assembly to see if any issues show up!

the blocks that I am looking at getting are in fact countersunk..
and I will take many notes on the engine, and photos to add.
I am curious too about the scuffing/scoring on the rear cylinder, the front cyl don't have it..
Anyway, the cylinders are going to be put to rest for a little while, since I am working.........longdistance on another set there in the US.
Heads too, putting them to rest for a little while.
I'll keep the update going.........
And I promice to TRY and not ask so many questions.

Re: tappet block fitment
George!
Are the scuffing issues low in the cylinder?
The scuffing issue can have infinite causes,
but if we eliminate particulates like dirt and motor fleas,
and everything else that shouldn't be there,
we still have enormous flex of the cast iron spigots at large overbores.
I have recorded distortions of .070"-over bores, when torqued into plates as if installed, showing in excess of .0015" movement inward in spots, and in excess of .0015" outward at other spots.
Friction is deadly.
Excessive clearance isn't a benefit either.
Yours at least survived it.
Forgiveness is what made these wonders into a wonder.
It is no surprise however, that the manufacturer paid little attention to maximize the serviceable life of a casting that they offered brand new.

Re: tappet block fitment
The drain holes on the pan lifter blocks are allot smaller than shovel. Don't know why? Seems when they were made it would have been easier to break through the bottom of the block with the same bit. Restrict bottom end pulse?
