Case finish after welding

#1

Post by mbskeam »

Description: What media have you guys used to get the cast surface look.

had to fix a few cracks in the case, got that done.
but what media have you guys used to get the cast surface look.
I have tryed a few things and the surface still has the smooth look from the repair.
was thinking I might try steel shot, like the kind that is used in shot peening. not going to blast it hard, just give it that as cast look.
anybody have the answer?

I use steel shot, before other finish preps.
Don't forget a marred-up coarse grinding wheel on a piece o' poolcue for that extra realism (genuine old outlaw trick).

I was told to use coarse sand paper and tap on the back with a hammer. I didn't try it because mine was a fin on my head I made and welded on, but it sounded like a decent idea.

I can't remember the 'gauge' of the shot, but they average ~.020"; coulda been a little coarser...
The broken stone is for beating 'character' into the fresh metal, using irregular random strokes while scolding "Bad motorcycle, Bad!"
Once you have employed this technique, you learn to recognize where boogered VIN numbers have been fudged with it.

After I got my cases back from Head Hog there were several areas that looked freshly ground {shiney} My engine assembly guy glass beaded the cases so now you cant tell they were ever touched.
