I run 60 wt valvoline in my pan, been using it for years. There may be something better, but until I find it thats what is available for now. Sometimes its just personal choice. Scott

Bob!
Your fresh motor will benefit from the lighter oil for the "limber up" period, when you will want to change it often anyway.
Even 40wt will not hurt it.
Please remember also that heavy oil holds heat.

Re: been a while, what oil you guys runnin in pans now
From all the oil threads I've read on this forum, I've seen lots of folks state that they use some type of automotive oil. What I don't recall seeing is anyone talk about oils specifically formulated for air cooled (v twin) motors. Heck , I saved the 10w40 drained from the lawn tractor and used it in my Norton for years and never had a problem...(Of course the way that bike sumped, it never had the same oil in it for very long.)

Bob!
Its too precious!
I must save it for hotter-running Flatties and total-loss machines, so I hoard it jealously, fearfull that formulations and availability has changed.
My shop oil is Texaco Ursa 50.
Hell, I don't know if they still make that anymore!

Bob!
I believe Rotella (T?),Texaco Ursa, and Aeroshell are formulated very much the same, but Aeroshell lacks many additives that are beneficial.
The point of eliminating the additives is that it elimates "ash", which can be a problem with the higher temperatures of Flatties, especially those that intentionally pass oil past their rings.
If your machine was a tired warhorse, an ashless oil would be usefull, but otherwise, Rotella should be just fine!
